Fishing:
You can go fly-fishing on the East River, Taylor River and Gunnison River.
Dragonfly Outfitters (970-349-1228), 307 Elk Avenue, specialize in fly-fishing. They are a guide service so they can take you out on a trip. They also can rent or sell everything you need. Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting (888-761-3474 or 970-641-1303), is located at the mouth of Taylor Canyon, 10 miles north of Gunnison. They offer guided fly-fishing trips, fly and paddle shop, and even have cabins, RVs and tent sites available.
Or, try Troutfitter Sports (866-349-1323), 313 Elk Ave, Crested Butte. While they specialize in fly-fishing, they also have hiking gear available. They are also a guide service so they can take you out on a trip, and can rent or sell everything you need.
Water Experiences:
Calling themselves "Gunnison's Country's original river rats," Scenic River Tours (970-641-3131), 703 W. Tomichi Avenue, offers family floats, whitewater rafting, inflatable kayaks, and fishing with experienced guides.
Hiking:
You can hike all over the mountain up at the resort. Or take it easy by riding the chairlift up Mt. Crested Butte and walking back down the mountain.
Biking:
Crested Butte is a mountain biking paradise. Rental shops are all over Crested Butte and Gunnison. You can get bikes, helmets, water bottles and maps. The gearheads at the shops can set you up for short rides, or full- and half-day trips. Go off-road or ride through town. Child carriers are often available.
Rental shops include: Alpineer (970-349-5210), 419 6th Street, Crested Butte. They rent and sell all mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, and climbing gear. Crested Butte Sports (970-349-7516), 35 Emmons Rd, Mt. Crested Butte, specializes in summer biking gear. They offer rentals and repairs, as well as sales. They also have maps and trail information.
Water Sports:
Sail, windsurf or water ski at Blue Mesa Reservoir in the Gunnison area. You'll find 20 miles of water and 96 miles of shoreline. Blue Mesa is Colorado's largest body of water, and has been called "Mother Nature's Playground." The season runs May 1-October 1.
Nearby is the Curecanti National Recreation Area which has three lakes.
Or, follow Taylor River Canyon up to Taylor Reservoir for hiking, boating or fishing.
Take a boat tour on Morrow Point Lake near the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park where you'll see spectacular rock spires including the Curecanti Needle.
The Arts:
Crested Butte Center for the Arts (970-349-7487), 606 6th Street, coordinates all of the plays, art shows, concerts and cultural entertainment in Crested Butte.
Crested Butte Music Festival (970-349-0619), 308 3rd Street, presents over 50 performances and workshops that span four weeks - July 1-31- both in town and at the ski area. In addition to music, the Festival offers other arts, including poetry readings and dance. There are also master classes, lectures, and lessons with local and visiting masters open to the public.
